Asking for a pay raise – a few thoughts on Indra Nooyi’s remark in the New York Times Magazine

Salary raises are touchy issues. When someone of the stature of Indra nooyi makes a remark about the reasonableness of asking for hikes, it is bound to raise a lot of eyebrows. The common reaction is “hey, she is a wealthy lady, so she needn’t ask for one anymore, but we need to? Thats true as well. However, it is unfair to Indra and her life’s work if her remark was negatively perceived. Her remark comes from the depths of a deep, brahmanic cultural upbringing that often put education and performance above everything else. Indra’s comment is better understood from the dual perspectives of culture and as an immigrant. The thoughts in this short essay is my attempt to understand what Indra meant when she made the comment on pay, to the New York Times.
